Sarangkot or Lakeside: is a night up here worth it?

Most visitors see Sarangkot in a hurry, by taxi before dawn. Here is an honest look at what a night on the ridge gives you, what it costs you, and how to get back down.

Most people see Sarangkot in a rush: a taxi from Lakeside before dawn, half an hour at the viewpoint, and back down for breakfast. A night on the ridge turns that into an evening and a morning. We are a lodge up here, so weigh our view accordingly; we have tried to be fair to the lake.

What you gain

  • Sunset and sunrise from the same ridge, without a pre-dawn drive.

  • A second chance: if the first morning is cloudy, the next may not be.

  • Quiet evenings, with the lights of Pokhara spread out below.

  • Cooler air in the hot months before the monsoon.

What you give up

  • Nightlife, and the long choice of restaurants and cafés by the lake.

  • The lake on your doorstep: boats and the lakeside walk are a ride away.

  • An easy road. The last stretch up is narrow and steep, so arrive before dark.

How do you get down to Lakeside?

Three ways: a taxi (about 12 km by road), the cable car down to Sedi Bagar by the lake, or on foot in about 1.5–2 hours. Details are on our getting here page, in the cable car guide and in the hiking guide.

Is one night enough?

For one sunset and one sunrise, yes. Two nights give you a spare morning if the first is cloudy, and a day for the walks along the ridge to Kaskikot or down to the lake. Ideas are in things to do in Sarangkot.
